The Big Book of Cats is a weekly illustration project. In 1998, I was 11 years old and decided to make a 200 page encyclopedia of anthropomorphic cat girls. I’ve made a vow to honor this horrific piece of literature and redraw every cat girl and post a new drawing along with the original for the internet’s amusement. Want to know more? Read my official introduction here and check out all the drawings so far here!
You’re welcome and I’m so so sorry.

When I was flipping through the book for my next cat girl, I was struck by the fact that Lolly is pretty much just Zooey Deschanel, right? That dress is probably cotton and she will ask Siri for directions to the nearest record store to ride her bike to! And we’ll all swoon with charm and secret envy. Just a little bit.
I may have redrawn her just a bit more Zooey-ish. She’s twirling along with her turn table. Swoon!
Also, I remember going through phases of obsession with certain names. I would name all my Barbies the name for a bit, make up an original character or two, etc. These names were all pretty strippery sounding. I specifically remember infatuation with Skye, Desiree, and Lolly. I definitely had multiple little stories and comics written about different girls named Lolly.

First off, from one artist to another – I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this Big Book of Cats idea. I wish I still had some of my old artwork from my childhood so I could do something similar. (We moved every year, so that stuff was always the first to get tossed.)
I do so love Lolly and her adorable outfit. This is the kind of style that I’ve moved towards in the last year – dress & tights. And I agree, very Zooey Deschanel-like, which isn’t a bad thing – she’s adorable.
And I also have an infatuation with the name Skye – I want that to be the name of my daughter, if I ever have one.
Can’t wait to see more!
I just love your style so so much! And Lolly is officially my favorite. : )
Names I was obsessed with and named my Barbies: Diamond and Crystal. Diamond was always the good girl and Crystal the evil step-sister or something.
Lolly might be my favorite so far. I love that red dress. She looks like she’s having so much fun.
I just found your blog via Mermaidens and this is awesome. I’m pretty sure I’ve trashed/ burned/ forever blotted out all the drawing I did when I was younger. Super props to you for letting them see the light of day again!!
This totally reminds me of Zooey! I love the dress, it’s something I would totally want to wear!
Haha this is actually a dress I’ve been dreaming of owning myself for ages! :)
I love this one! Are there prints? I want a print!
Thanks, Carrie! No prints for any cat girls yet. I think I’d like to put a book together when they’re all done!
