The Big Book of Cats is a weekly illustration project. In 1998, I was 11 years old and decided to make a 200 page encyclopedia of anthropomorphic cat girls. I’ve made a vow to honor this horrific piece of literature and redraw every cat girl and post a new drawing along with the original for the internet’s amusement. Want to know more? Read my official introduction here and check out all the drawings so far here!
You’re welcome and I’m so so sorry.

Siighhh not to be a hater, but I wish every cat girl was as cool as Mary. I love everything about her, from her platform boots to her skirt-over-jeans combo. Everything is ripped in a totally calculated “man, I don’t even care” kind of way. Tousled hair and fur, piercings, (edgy?) asymmetrical boobs… perfection! I even love that her name is Mary and she has this Catholic school girl gone bad attitude–I like that 11 year old, Catholic school girl Michelle was already glorifying bad ass, rebellious chicks like this.

Mary is the only cat girl whose pose I really didn’t feel the need to stray too far from. It’s already too good! Totally expresses her personality. And yes, I do remember that I intended for her to be blowing a bubble with her gum–not for her to have weird, collagen lips, which is kind of what the original looks like. My favorite detail is the cartoony scar mark on her shirt.
P.S. Mary and Lizzie are totally BFFs. I’d say they help each other out with their fashion blog photos like Sadie and Kristen, but let’s be real, they’re probably too cool for that.

I think Mary and I probably shopped at Hot Topic together around the same time. Though, her style has improved more than mine of the years.
She is wonderful :) but one must wonder…can she play DDR in those platforms?
YES! Idk if she can, but she’ll certainly try!
Gah another one, man I love these too much. How many more cat girls do you have left to draw?
I think I’m almost half-way done… I counted once and there’s almost 60 girls. I kind of never want it to end though!
I wouldn’t either, are you going to add any extra girls? Or do one that looks like yourself?
No idea! I’d like to draw little extras like some girls hanging out together or doing different things that suit their personalities… who knows what the future holds!
So I’ll admit Mary kind of intimidates me. But then I read Sammie’s comment about her playing DDR in those platforms, and the mental image makes her a lot less threatening :-) I love her hairstyle–rockin an almost-mullet. Nice.
Hahaha, she’s a total sheep in wolf’s clothing!
I really, really, really love everything about this project, including your description of it <3 Can't wait to see more cats =^..^=
i get excited every time i see that you have a new post in my bloglovin’ feed…i don’t know what i will do when you run out of cats to redo!
Ahh, I don’t either! I’m having a blast. Thanks for the sweet comments :)
I SO hope you make an actual printed book with all of these old and new version cat girls. It’s seriously the best ever.
xo Moorea
Eeeep thank you, Moorea!! I do a lot of freelance work for a local publishing/printing company so you never know! :)
oh hey girl power! I love that you made this when you were 11… so amazing.
I know! I’m very impressed with my 11 year old self. I’d be lying if I said all the girls were as progressive as Mary, though. Haha
Can I just say how much I love Mary’s tail? The overall look is fantastic, but it’s little details like this that really take it to the next level. You’re awesome.
