project: big book of cats

Big Book of Cats: Linda

October 1, 2014

The Big Book of Cats is a weekly illustration project. In 1998, I was 11 years old and decided to make a 200 page encyclopedia of anthropomorphic cat girls. I’ve made a vow to honor this horrific piece of literature and redraw every cat girl and post a new drawing along with the original for the internet’s amusement. Want to know more? Read my official introduction here and check out all the drawings so far here!

You’re welcome and I’m so so sorry.

Your eyes are not deceiving you, friend! This is indeed a new Big Book of Cats post! Can you believe it? Honestly, many of you haven’t even been following my blog long enough to remember BBOC. My last one was in November 2013–almost a whole year ago! That really blows my mind. As mentioned in my intro, you can learn more about this project here and see all the other drawings here!

It bums me out that I haven’t kept up on my weekly schedule. I was so consistent for so long! However, the original goal of this project was to make sure I was drawing for fun and sharing my work every week while I was stuck at a less-than-inspiring day job. Since then I’ve taken on so much extra illustration work and started all my handmade adventures, so it’s certainly not a failure. I have no intention of calling it quits, I just never want this project to be another stressful deadline in my life. Hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze them in more than annually, though! Jeez.

Linda is a sassy bitch and she’s definitely judging you. My muse has apparently always been a girl with attitude who wears crop tops and boots. My favorite part of Linda’s original drawing is the earrings mysteriously dangling from the side of her face while her ears are on top of her head. Haha.

  • I am so excited for another Big Book of Cat illustration! I’m so in love with this project and just so happy to get one whenever you get the time!

  • Has it really been that long? I remember thinking a while ago… i wonder when she;’ll post a new cat drawing. Yay, they’re baaaack!

    • That was my reaction, too! Like, jeez, 11 months?! I was always kind of nervous about blog life after BBOC finished, but clearly I can carry on just fine without it. Haha.

  • Sara Funduk

Yes!! The Big Book of Cats is back!!

  • Ooo she is so sassy. Love it. I can’t wait to see for cats.

  • I love this…HA! Amazing.

  • I’m so glad these are back. My blog-reading experience has been lacking cat girls.

  • Elana

Oh my god, this is beautiful. I love you.

  • Yay, Big Book of Cats!! I love the redesigned outfit but I especially adore both iterations of Linda’s side eye. Perfection!

  • Kerry

WOW! Can I just say how much love I have for this? I went back through your old cat girl posts…I love how they totally capture that period of time (I graduated from college in 1998 – so I do not have the excuse of being 11 to explain away my Spice Girls obsession). But I digress, this project is lovely and the drawings are exquisite. This blog post made my day & I will be looking forward to more Big Book of Cats!

  • YAY, I love BBOC!! So happy to see a new entry!!! I love all these beautiful cat girls <3

  • Oh my god!! I love this so much! I like Linda’s attitude. BOTH illustrations are cat-tastic! (sorry, that was so lame).

  • I’ve missed these. This is just wonderful.

  • Melissa Hayes

    Yay! I missed these!!!

  • I’m so excited to see a cat post from you! YAY this totally made my day, I love to see how you interpret your old drawings :)

  • YES. I love this. For some reason, I didn’t really think much of her earrings not being on her ears in the original drawing, haha.

    • Hahaha, it took me a minute to notice, too. They all look so human that it always feels pretty weird to stick the ears up there.

  • JennyOH

OMG NEW BBOC. I didn’t realize how much I loved and missed this until Linda showed up. She definitely has sass for miles.

  • I am SO GLAD this is happening again!! She is real fierce and I’m loving all the sass.

  • Oh wow- this is so amazing! I just had too much fun reading your intro post, I love all the names with their own personal handwriting :)

  • Melissa

I’m so happy to see these again! The BBOC is by far my favorite feature on any blog. It is so similar to something I would have done as a child. I hope you keep it up! This one reminds me of Gwen Stefani with her platinum blonde hair.

  • I was just thinking about your cats the other day, and I wanted to check to see if you had posted about them again… AND LOW AND BEHOLD! I am so happy to see the return! I think it’s awesome that you are doing this project still, even if you did take a long break! (Wow, I’ve been reading your blog for over a year!)
