Big Book of Cats: Anastasia

April 3, 2013

The Big Book of Cats is a weekly illustration project. In 1998, I was 11 years old and decided to make a 200 page encyclopedia of anthropomorphic cat girls. I’ve made a vow to honor this horrific piece of literature and redraw every cat girl and post a new drawing along with the original for the internet’s amusement. Want to know more? Read my official introduction here and check out all the drawings so far here!

You’re welcome and I’m so so sorry.

29anastasia01This week I present another stunning show of creativity from young Michelle–Anastasia! Who is pretty much just a feline version of Anastasia from the animated film of the same name that–shocker–happened to be released in 1997. Unfortunately there are more ridiculous instances of plagiarism to come from the BBOC, so I can’t even mock this one too harshly.

For 2013 Anastasia, I tried to give her a slightly more accurate Russian formal look and it was really fun to draw! I took inspiration mostly from this Russian imperial court gown from 1900. Anastasia’s looking a bit nervous about this whole situation and I don’t blame her. Hopefully this alternate universe cat lady version doesn’t share a similar tragic fate.

  • Pretty! I love her dress and her expression. :]

  • Vicky

She’s so concerned! LOL SO CUUUUTE

  • i am at work laughing like a maniac at this! actually, i think maybe mostly laughing at the tweet of yours that sent me here (“you weirdo”!). and i think i’m also laughing at the cat boobs in the first drawing. it’s probably so funny to me because my 11 year old self drew very similar to your 11 year old self.

now the difference is that you grew up and have amazing illustration skills and i still draw like the first one, ha. i love this, like always!

Hi, I found your blog through a link to this project and I fell in love with it. Have you considered starting a crowdfunding campaign to publish a book with these illustrations? I love the concept and I would put my money on it without a doubt, I’m sure a lot of people out there think the same ^_^

    • Michelle

Aww, thanks, Irene! That’s so nice of you to say. :) I’m currently toying with plans to make a series of zines with the cat girls and hope to put together a nice little book when the project is complete. I do freelance work for a local digital publishing/printing company, so I think I could get a decent discount to help me out!

  • Damn she classy.

  • Erika

I feel like she would have been a lot of fun to draw then and now! I love her dress and attention to detail!

  • Ooooo, that dress is so pretty! Would it be totally weird to cosplay as a cat girl? Even if it was, I think I would still do it for the dress ~_^

    • Michelle

Any excuse to wear an amazing dress is a good one, imo! No judgement here! :)

  • This series never fails to brighten my day. Love that you found an actual Russian ballgown from the general time period.
